Carlos Martins, who holds a degree in Civil Engineering, has been working in the field of environmental remediation of former mining areas since 2011. He began his career as a consultant at EDM – Empresa de Desenvolvimento Mineiro, S.A., where he later took on the role of Coordinator of the Environmental Remediation Division and is currently Technical Director, responsible, among other things, for the management and supervision of environmental rehabilitation projects.

25 years of Environmental Remediation of Former Mining Areas in Portugal – Challenges, Achievements and Sustainability for the Future.

Over the last 25 years, EDM has carried out environmental restoration work on abandoned former mining areas as the exclusive concessionaire of the Portuguese State, under the terms of Decree-Law No. 198-A/2001, based on the identification of 199 abandoned and degraded former mining areas on the mainland. The presentation is, above all, an invitation. An invitation to explore the different facets of a journey built up over 25 years of experience in Environmental Remediation and an opportunity to learn in detail how science, technology and environmental commitment intertwine, shaping solutions that restore territories and project a more balanced and responsible future. This ongoing effort has already resulted in significant progress and the implementation of numerous rehabilitation actions, demonstrating the relevance of the work carried out. However, there is still a long way to go, with the future marked by new challenges and the need to continue with determination the mission entrusted.
