BIO

Dr. Mahdi Shabanimashcool is a Senior Researcher at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) in Oslo, Norway. He is currently the Technical Lead of the EU Horizon–funded DINAMINE project, which focuses on developing digital technologies for small to medium-sized mines in Europe. Prior to joining NGI, he was an Associate Professor of Mining Engineering at UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. His main areas of expertise include underground mine design, rock mass caving, pillar design, and mine backfilling.

Digital technologies for integrated mine planning, scheduling, and management in small to medium-sized mines

Currently available digital technologies in the mining industry are largely developed for large-scale operations, not for small to medium-sized mines. In these smaller operations, ore bodies are often irregular, equipment is typically outdated or based on legacy systems, and attracting the right talent is challenging. Moreover, such mines usually lack the financial capacity to invest in advanced technologies. This presentation will briefly introduce the methods developed in the DINAMINE project (funded by the EU Horizon programme), specifically tailored to the needs of small and medium-sized mines. The approach considers the entire value chain—from mine to port—and integrates a cloud-based solution with IoT sensors to support efficient planning, scheduling, and management.
