Ornamental Stones: A Strategic Sector for Portugal – The Sustainable Stone by Portugal Project

The Sustainable Stone by Portugal Agenda is the largest mobilizing initiative ever undertaken for the Portuguese natural stone sector, uniting companies, research centers, universities, and public institutions in a shared vision of innovation, sustainability, and international competitiveness. Its mission is to transform the entire value chain, from extraction to processing and application in architecture and design, by integrating advanced technologies, circular economy principles, and low-carbon solutions. The Agenda is structured around collaborative R&D and demonstration projects that address digitalization, eco-efficiency, product innovation, and global market positioning. By fostering cooperation through a quadruple-helix model, it strengthens the role of Portuguese stone in emblematic works worldwide while ensuring alignment with the EU Green Deal and the twin green and digital transition. More than an industrial program, the Agenda represents a strategic commitment to positioning natural stone as a sustainable, high-value material for the future of construction and design.
